50 Years of Television Exhibition at National Museum of Singapore

From now till 19 January next year, you can enjoy free admission to '50 Years of Television' exhibition which showcase the history of television development in Singapore and A Change World: Singapore Art 1950s-1970s . However as others reported, it is more on MediaCorp history as it did not include the history of Channel U that is now defunct. Also it did not include Chinese description thus many senior Chinese viewers who watched the Mandarin shows could not understand it. Also some of the Mandarin words were typed wrongly showing unprofessionalism.

Besides this exhibition, there are other paid admission exhibition like Singapore Biennale 2013. I will blog about the other two exhibitions in later time. In addition, there are permanent exhibitions on Singapore history on food, photography and entertainment at level 2. Wow, this year, I visited many Singapore museums as there are many interesting exhibitions this year.

From National Museum of Singapore website
'50 Years of Television: An Exhibition celebrates the arrival and development of the television and how it has shaped entertainment and lifestyle habits in Singapore from 1963 to today. This exhibition will examine the social and cultural changes resulting from the advent and growth of television broadcasting and consumption, and the role of the television in recording and reflecting the nation’s defining moments. Remember the times when you gathered to watch television at the community centre or in your neighbour’s house? These endearing memories show how the television has always been an integral part of our lives. While the social settings around the television have evolved, the television still remains highly relevant in today’s ever-changing media landscape.'

I remember this drama vividly as I anticipated this show when I was very young. Think I watched the repeat broadcast. I really thought they made a perfect couple.
Residents watching television at a community centre in 1982. Television was really expensive then and not many could afford it.
The evolution of televisions
My grandparents used to have this television console in a hardwood frame.
Local magazines
Predecessor of my favourite Chinese magazine, I magazine. On cover is Hong Kong actress who starred as Xiao Long Nu.

Costumes of The Journey, A Voyage.
Currently showing in Channel 8, touted as the Blockbuster. My grandfathers travelled to Singapore from China, Chaozhou in the 1930s when the Kuomintang or Nationalist government ruled China. My maternal grandfather was only 15 years old when he travelled on his own to Singapore. I really admire his guts.
