Ushering the Auspicious Dragon Chinese New Year 2024

Finally the auspicious Dragon Chinese Lunar New year has arrived! I'm elated and look forward to the Chinese New Year celebration with my relatives.

Today is a really productive and fulfilling day. After work, I went to Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple at Waterloo street to pray. After praying, I walked to the city area to recycle plastic bottles and had lunch.

I did the final spring cleaning, laundry and final decoration at home. Cleaning the shelves is quite therapeutic, cleaning away the past and dust, and welcoming the new energy. In the evening, I had a sumptuous reunion at home with my family.

The Dragon in Chinese culture is an emblem of power, good fortune and strength and it is usually a popular year to have babies. To all my relatives, friends and faithful kind readers, may you enjoy a prosperous and healthy Chinese New Year!

Jia Wei Chinese Restaurant at Hotel Grand Mercure Roxy

Last Saturday, my youngest brother treated my parents and me to a sumptuous dinner at Jia Wei Chinese restaurant at Grand Mercure Roxy hotel which is located in Katong.

They are known for their Peking duck so my brother ordered one whole duck as there is 50% discount till August. In Beijing, I tried the famous Quanjide Peking duck so I was not so impressed especially after I ate some of the duck meat in another fried ginger duck dish. The waitress told us that we could choose to cook the other half of the duck in any style we want. I find the meat rather tough and not as tender.

However I love their fried beancurd and soft shell crab with salted egg yolk and also their fried ee mee noodles. Service was good too. For all the dishes that we had, it only cost about $130plus.

DuanWu Dumpling Festival

Today is DuanWu or dumpling festival to commemorate the death of loyal poet, Qu Yuan who died about 2000 years ago. Now we celebrate dumpling festival with dragon boat competition and eating of rice dumplings.

My mother is a great cook and I only eat dumplings prepared by my mum. The fragrant glutinous rice dumplings are filled with aromatic five-spiced marinated diced pork and chestnut. I don't like too much rice and prefer little rice but with lots of filling. For me, I just eat dumplings and don't really participate in dragonboat race.

Dim Sum at Imperial Treasure Restaurant Again!

I went to Imperial Treasure Yi Dian Xin dim sum restaurant at Raffles City shopping mall just last week and I'm surprised they changed their menu again! This time there is Bo Lou Bao with char siew pork bun which requires about 20 minutes to prepare and mango and prawn fried roll.

I lost the receipt, but total cost is less than $30.00

Mei Heong Yuan Dessert at Chinatown

After dinner at G7 Liang Kee Restaurant, my relatives treated me Chinese Dessert in Chinatown  Mei Heong Yuan. I enjoyed eating with my relatives as we can share a wide variety of dessert. We had hot dessert like egg pudding with ginger which to me taste like preserved egg. Mango and green tea snow ice are quite ok. I won't say they are impressive because I tasted better snow ice in Taiwan.

They also serve hot Chinese snacks like chee Cheong fun, glutinous rice and yam cake. I prefer their yam and carrot cake as compared to their snow ice.
