Singapore River Walk 2023

Yesterday was a really productive day. After admiring blooming flowers at Flower Dome and Floral Fantasy, Gardens by the Bay, I decided to travel from Bayfront MRT to Raffles Place MRT station.

From Raffles Place MRT station, I took the opportunity to explore various art sculptures which are spread around the buzzing Central Business District (will post about it soon). I walked about 24000 steps yesterday! Luckily weather was quite good, bright and sunny with no rain. It was an awesome day even though I walked alone, accompanied by my favourite music as I admired the cosmopolitan city with gleaming tall architectures and colourful shophouses.

After looking at the various art sculptures at Raffles Place, I decided to walk and explore Singapore River and to Ord Bridge located at Clark Quay, near River Valley.

Singapore River was a flourishing commercial centre where goods were traded.  Many Teochews used to reside near the Singapore River.

I read an article from The Straits Times and realised that Ord bridge was one of the places used by the japanese soldiers during World War 2. About three days after the fall of Singapore in 1942, japanese soldiers rounded up River Valley residents and ordered them to gather at the Ord bridge. Many Chinese men were taken away and never returned home again. It was devastating for many families. This Sook Ching massacre saw about 50000 Chinese men lost their lives during World War 2 in Singapore. Perhaps there should be a signboard stating the history, to remind future generation not to take peace for granted. Hopefully there is no more war. No one wins in war.

From River Valley, I walked to City Hall MRT and midway, I stopped at the Esplanade theatre concourse to rest and to watch rehearsals by Xinmin Nightingle, choir from Xinmin Primary School. Bravo singing! I decided to eat my dinner first at Cedele at Raffles city shopping mall and later went back to Esplanade as I was really impressed by their performance and stayed on to watch their next performance.

Tourists from around the world are back to Singapore. Saw many tourist buses near this iconic Merlion.
Esplanade Theatres by the bay is one of my favourite places in Singapore.

Cavenagh bridge 加文纳桥 is one of the oldest bridges in Singapore, opened in 1869. It is a suspension bridge that is located near the Fullerton hotel.

You can see beautiful art under the bridge.

A beautiful shop.

This is the Ord Bridge that was used as the gathering place during World War 2. Many residents who lived around River Valley were told to gather there, three days after the fall of Singapore. Many Chinese men never returned home.
