Georgette Chen At Home in The World Exhibition

I love the amazing oil paintings by Georgette Chen, an inspiring artist and educator who chose to retire in Singapore after living in many other cities like Shanghai, New York and Paris.

I visited the exhibition this June with my friend who also enjoy appreciating arts. I hope there be more art exhibitions at National Gallery soon.

From National Gallery Singapore

Georgette Chen (1906—1993) is a key figure in the development of modern art in Singapore, widely recognised for her achievements as an artist and contributions as an educator. Born in Zhejiang, China, Chen studied at art academies in Paris and New York, and exhibited her work in annual salon exhibitions as well as solo presentations in Paris, Shanghai, New York, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

Much of Chen’s life was marked by local and global conflicts including the Chinese Revolutions of 1911 and 1949, and World War I and II. Throughout these upheavals she strove to remain dedicated to her profession as an artist. In the post-war period, Chen relocated to Malaya, and settled in Singapore in 1953, where she made her name and living as a painter and teacher. Working for almost three decades at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, she was an active influence in the art community, serving as a mentor to and supporter of other artists.

This exhibition spans two galleries, and starts with Chen’s time in Malaya and Singapore, where she painted her most emblematic works. Declaring Malaya “a paradise for the artist,” Chen revelled in the beauty and variety of the region. The second part of the exhibition explores Chen’s early years, her academic training, and the increasing recognition she gained as a professional artist exhibiting her work around the world. A rare opportunity to encounter the range of Chen’s practice over five decades and three continents, this exhibition critically re-examines her unique contributions to the artistic landscape of her time.

World Expo 2020 Dubai

I hope to visit World Expo one day. It'll be amazing to explore many countries by visiting their pavilions in just one city. The World Expo is supposed to start last year but is delayed to this year due to Covid19. The next World Expo in 2025 will be held in Japan, Osaka city. I hope I can visit the World Expo in 2025.

Let's explore some pavilions from around the world, starting with Singapore.

From https://www.bie-paris.org/site/en/about-world-expos

World Expos, officially known as International Registered Exhibitions, are a global gathering of nations dedicated to finding solutions to pressing challenges of our time by offering a journey inside a universal theme through engaging and immersive activities. World Expos welcome tens of millions of visitors, allow countries to build extraordinary pavilions and transform the host city for years to come.

The first World Expo – the Great Exhibition – took place in London in 1851. The concept became popular and was repeated across the globe, demonstrating an unparalleled power of attraction and a record of world-class legacies. Since the BIE was created in 1928 to regulate and oversee these mega-events, World Expos have explicitly been organised around a theme that attempts to improve humankind’s knowledge, takes into account human and social aspirations and highlights scientific, technological, economic and social progress.

In the modern era, World Expos are unrivalled among international events in their size, scale, duration and visitor numbers. They are large-scale platforms for education and progress that serve as a bridge between governments, companies, international organisations, and citizens.

World Expo 2020 is taking place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, between 1 October 2021 and 31 March 2022.

Yin Yang Cloud

I took this photo of this amazing cloud formation like Yin Yang cloud where one part of the sky is filled with clouds and the other side devoid of cloud at my workplace at Singapore on 14 June 2021 morning. Amazing isn't it?

Just for Laugh - Cats

I received this hilarious picture via Watsapp from my friend. Quite true to a certain extent. 😆

Baby Panda Finally Opened His Eyes!

Baby panda finally opened his eyes this week!

From the Straits Times

SINGAPORE - The first giant panda cub born in Singapore reached another milestone this week – opening his eyes to see the world for the first time.

He did so at 40 days old on Wednesday (Sept 22), said Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) in a statement on Friday, adding that the panda cub weighed 1.87kg, up 370g from the previous week.

The cub is the firstborn of giant pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia, the famous residents of the River Safari, who arrived in Singapore from China in 2012 under a 10-year loan from the Chinese authorities.

Mid-Autumn Festival Light-up at Chinatown Singapore

From now till 5th October, 880 m of Chinatown's streets are decorated with 900 lanterns including the beautiful 12 metres tall Chinese Goddess of the moon Chang-Er. This year Chang-Er lantern design is more beautiful compared to last year. To read more on this year Chinatown's Mid-Autumn Festival Light-up, click here.

Yesterday I went to Chinatown to view the Mid-Autumn light-up. The street was quiet and not crowded on Friday night perhaps due to the rising covid cases in Singapore. I hope appropriate and necessary actions can be implemented to stem the rise of covid cases in Singapore. The government needs to come up with feasible plan to cope with the rising covid cases. One death is simply too many.

Streets are adorned with lanterns inspired from pomelo and mooncakes.

Honouring the wise

From the Straits Times

SINGAPORE - Chinatown's Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations will kick off next Tuesday (Sept 7) with a virtual light-up and opening ceremony.

The light-up, which will be streamed on Chinatown Festivals' Facebook page, will see some 880m of Chinatown's streets lined with 900 lanterns till Oct 5.

Lanterns sculpted as mooncakes and jade rabbits will be hung along the stretch of road between Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road, while South Bridge Road will be decorated with lanterns styled as snow skin mooncakes.

This year's light-up takes the theme of reunion - in tribute to how Singaporeans have stood together to overcome the challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The centre divider between Eu Tong Sen Street and North Bridge Road will feature scenes of a family reunion, which represent three values - honouring the wise, harmony and happiness.

The highlight of this year's lantern display is a towering 12m-tall centrepiece depicting Chang-E, the Chinese goddess of the moon, located opposite Chinatown Point.

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival

Today is Mid-Autumn Festival with the bright full moon hanging high up in the sky for all to admire its sheer beauty.

I had one small orh nee yam paste mooncake and 2 slices of pomelo for dinner.  I also took the opportunity to take photo of the beautiful bright illuminous moon today.
Bright full moon on 15th of lunar month. Today is Mid-Autumn Festival.
Orh nee or yam paste mooncake is my favourite mooncake. I don't like baby yam as I find it a troublesome to eat.
Had two slices of pomelo.

I love this song 但愿人长久 by Faye Wong. The lyrics is actually from a Song Dynasty poem by the famous artist, poet and politician  Su Shi (8 January 1037 – 24 August 1101) popularly known as Su DongPo.

I took the translation from this blog here

(Wish People for a Long Time(literal translation) or May People Live Long)

明月幾時有 when will there be a bright moon,
把酒問青天 raise my glass of wine and ask the clear sky.
不知天上宮闕 do not know in the heavenly palace,
今夕是何年 this evening is what year.
I wish to ride the wind back,
唯恐瓊樓玉宇 for fear that this jade palace,
高處不勝寒 high above is unbearably cold.
起舞弄清影   dancing with my quiet shadow,
何似在人間 how can it compare to the human world.
轉朱閣  rounds the red pavilion,
低綺戶 stoops beneath ornate doors,
照無眠 shines upon the sleepless.
不應有恨 should not bear a grudge,
何事長向別時圓 why is the moon full when we are apart?
人有悲歡離合 man has joy, sorrow, parting, reunion,*
月有陰晴圓缺 moon has overcast, clear, full, crescent,
此事古難全 these matters from old are difficult to complete.*
但願人長久 wish people for a long time,
千里共嬋娟  thousand miles distant together share the beautiful moon.

Today Dinner: Yogurt with Dragonfruit and Nuts

Today dinner is simple yogurt with red dragonfruit, honey pecans and other nuts like walnut, almond and pumpkin seed. Felt very full after eating it.

This pecans honey is really crunchy sweet.

I like this Dairy Farmers yogurt from Australia. I prefer fig flavour but it's out of stock pretty fast.

Indulging in Mooncakes

This Tuesday is Mid-Autumn Festival and I be celebrating by eating more mooncakes and pomelo with my family at home. I will skip dinner and just eat mooncake this Tuesday.

This year my elder brother brought back many mooncakes distributed by his company and my younger brother's girlfriend also brought yam mooncake for us. I just had my favourite yam or orh nee mooncake and tried premium black and white sesame paste mooncake. I love black sesame seed and the moon cake is not so sweet. Next Friday I go to Gardens by the Bay and Chinatown to see lantern lighting.

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival to you all in advance!

This orh nee or yam mooncake from Yan is generously filled with yam paste with layered flaky crust skin. I love it!

Premium black and white sesame paste mooncake from Peach Garden Chinese restaurant. Quite nice for me as I like black sesame paste and it is not so sweet.

I had coffee with mooncake instead of tea. :)

Bright Sun with Halo on 18 September 2021

I saw some beautiful sun halo photos from CloudSpotting FB page. I decided to try my luck and see if I could capture it today. Some photographers managed to capture the halo sun with rainbow tail.  Anyway I managed to take photo of this bright sun before it was covered by the clouds today. I took the photos using my Samsung Note 10 plus phone at 1.39pm today near my home at Tampines.

Favourite Song at the Moment : 平凡之路

I love both the melody and poetic lyrics of this song 平凡之路 or ordinary path sang by 朴树 Pu Shu. Simply awesome! When the karaokes are allowed to operate I will sing with my friend Y maybe. My singing buddy.

Ordinary Path

Composer and Singer : Pu Shu
Lyrics by Pu Shu and Han Han

Via Via
Via Via
Via Via
Hia Hia
I love this cover song by Nicholas Tse, Jam Hsiao and Karry Wang.

Time to Raise Interest Rate?

It's high time USA Fed starts to raise interest rate. They must not ignore the negative impact of inflation rate.

For those who are still invested in stock, I think its high time to get out of the market. Next year Ren year and Wuqu Hua ji might see a massive market crash. Let's see if Chinese metaphysics prediction is accurate next year.

Baby Panda In Singapore

Baby panda is now about 1 month old. I hope to see this cutie in December at Singapore River Safari. What should we name him? Xing Xing 星星?

Spicy Mala Xiang Guo Instant Noodles

I know instant noodles is not healthy. But I really like this Myojo Spicy Mala Xiang Guo instant noodles. I eat this about once or twice a week. Definitely not healthy to eat instant noodles everyday.

This Mala instant noodle package is rare. I managed to find this at Tampines Central Community centre NTUC. But you can find the instant Mala bowl at most supermarkets in Singapore.
